Journal of Veterinary Dentistry: Soft Rawhide Reduces Calculus Formation in Dogs

Volume 26, No. 2, Summer 2009 by George K. Stookey, MSD, PhD

This study employed a rigorous 2-way crossover test with 4-week test periods and a 1-week wash-out period in between. By providing a soft rawhide treat to the test group dogs, there were statistically significant reductions in dental calculus formation and dental plaque based on thorough examinations conducted by experienced clinical examiners using conventional indices approximately 20 to 24 hours after the last feeding.
